导出博客文章ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Kansas City Royals pitchers are enjoying a
record-breaking run of success, and now the offence is joining in on the fun.
Luis Mendoza pitched six innings to win for the first time in six starts and
Elliot Johnson had another big hit against his former team Friday night, leading
the Royals to a 7-2 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays. Mendoza (2-3) gave up two
runs and seven hits and three Royals relievers pitched three hitless innings as
Kansas City held a 13th straight opponent to three runs or fewer. That
franchise-record streak is the longest in the American League since Toronto went
15 games from June 26 to July 13, 1991. Johnson had a game-tying triple among
his two hits and Billy Butler drove in three runs for the Royals, who have won
nine of 10. "You cant say enough good things about what our pitching staffs
done," Butler said. "Theyve been tremendous from day one, and its been fun to
watch. Its been really fun lately to have them meshing together with the offence
and defence. Were playing some good baseball right now and its fun to come to
the ballpark when youre playing like that." Tampa Bay starter Matt Moore (8-3)
gave up five runs on seven hits and four walks in 5 1-3 innings with four
strikeouts. He is 0-3 in five starts since winning his first eight starts of the
season. Matt Joyce hit his 13th home run, off Mendozas third pitch of the game,
and Evan Longoria drove in another run in the first inning with a double, giving
the Rays a 2-1 lead. They never scored again. "Our pitchings been phenomenal.
Another game today with two runs," said Royals manager Ned Yost. "Mendy started
out really shaky. He was all over the place and he was behind on everybody. ...
But he really settled himself in and his command got better. To get us into the
seventh inning like he did is a great job." Johnson, who had three hits
including a three-run home run on Thursday night, tied it with a triple in a
four-run fifth and scored on Alcides Escobars single to put the Royals ahead.
Eric Hosmer and Salvador Perez followed with hits and Butler, who had driven in
the Royals first run with a single, concluded the four-run inning with a
sacrifice fly. Butler drove in Kansas Citys final run with a two-out single off
Fernando Rodney in the ninth. It was his 517th RBI, moving him past Carlos
Beltran into eighth place on the Royals all-time list. Perez had two of Kansas
Citys 10 hits and drove in two runs. The Rays have lost five of six games in a
stretch in which their starting pitchers have a 9.29 ERA. "That is awkward for
us because we normally, on a nightly basis, feel really good about your matchup,
your starter versus theirs," Rays manager Joe Maddon said. "We havent had that
feeling in a bit." The Royals, who lead the AL with a 3.38 ERA, have not given
up as many as four runs in a game since May 31, when they lost 7-2 at Texas.
They have given up 25 runs in 13 games this month. NOTES: Longoria was the DH
for the second straight game. The slugger said he has been bothered the past two
weeks by plantar fasciitis. ... The Rays have signed SS Riley Unroe, their
second round pick in this years draft. His father, Tim Unroe, played five years
in the majors. ... Kansas City signed non-drafted free agent C Logan Davis, the
son of current Royals minor league pitching coach and one-time NL Cy Young Award
    winner Mark Davis. Swell Canada

-- With their major league-worst 102nd loss, Twins matched their most since
moving to Minnesota for the 1961 season.Kendrys Morales and Alex Gordon keyed an
eighth-inning rally and the Kansas City Royals beat the Twins 5-2 on Wednesday
night. Still, the defending World Series champions were eliminated from
postseason contention with Baltimores win at Toronto.Minnesota lost for the 10th
time in 11 games and matched the 1982 Twins for the teams most losses since the
move. With two more defeats, the club would have its most since the 1949
Washington Senators finished 50-104.Were trying to win games, but its becoming

things. Its a game. You just have to prepare to be better for the next year.Eric
Hosmer hit a two-run homer off Santana in the third, but the Twins tied it in
the sixth when Kennys Vargas homered with Miguel Sano aboard. The Vargas homer
snapped a Twins streak of 106 innings without multiple runs, then longest since
the Philadelphia Phillies went 109 innings in 1942, according to the Elias
Sports Bureau. We just kind of stagnated from there, Twins manager Paul Molitor
said.Santana finished with a 3.375 ERA, the second-best of his career, but won
only seven games. His innings are up, ERA was down, Molitor said. He gave us a
chance more times than not. He competed and he tried to hang in there on a team
that has lost a lot of games and continued to go out there and try to be
professional about it. He can stand tall. There are no shortcomings there, an
ERA in the 3.3s.Its just unfortunate, and we talked about it before, we gave
some games away that he pitched, maybe not playing good enough defeense or
backing him up offensively.dddddddddddd But if I was Ervin Santana I would feel
good about what I contributed and trying to give his best from day one all the
way through to his last start.Kendrys Morales ground-rule double to right scored
Jarrod Dyson, who had doubled and stole third. Gordons single scored Whit
Merrifield and pinch-runner Billy Burns.Taylor Rogers (3-1), the fourth of five
Twins pitchers, took the loss after allowing three runs, three hits and two
walks while retiring only one of the six batters.Joakim Soria (5-8) worked a
scoreless eighth, and Wade Davis got his 27th save in 30 chances.Royals
left-hander Jason Vargas allowed four hits in five shutout innings, leaving with
a 2-0 lead in his third start since Tommy John surgery in 2015. Vargas finished
with a 2.25 ERA, allowing three runs and eight hits while striking out 11 and
walking three in 12 innings.Kansas City did not get another hit after Hosmers
