battled through injuries and successfully emerged from its nonconference
schedule. The key now is for the Terrapins to get fully healthy for the Big
Ten.Melo Trimble had 21 points and Maryland extended its winning streak to five
games with an 88-72 victory over Charlotte on Tuesday night.Anthony Cowan scored
16 for the Terrapins, who made 10 3-pointers in the second half after going 1
for 9 before the break. Michal Cekovsky and Kevin Huerter had 10 points apiece
for Maryland (12-1).The Terrapins were playing without senior forward Damonte
Dodd (knee) and redshirt sophomore guard Dion Wiley (left wrist sprain), forcing
Turgeon to start three freshmen. We werent very good early in the game, Turgeon
said. I thought we got a little bit better as the game went on. I thought we
played an excellent second half. Its hard this time of year coming off finals. I
am really proud of the team to be 12-1, playing as many young guys. Weve had one
game all year where weve had the whole team healthy.Jon Davis led Charlotte
(6-5) with 28 points, tying his career high, while Andrien White scored 17.
Benas Griciunas finished with 12 points for the 49ers, who were just 4 of 14
from beyond the arc.Maryland trailed by as many as 10 points in the first half
before eventually cutting Charlottes lead to 37-36 on an over-the-head putback
by Cekovsky at the halftime buzzer. That was the spark that the Terrapins needed
after committing 13 turnovers in the opening half.Huerter made two quick layups,
Cekovsky had a dunk and Maryland had a 42-39 lead in the opening minutes of the
second half.Basketball in itself is a game of runs, Davis said. We have to come
out in the second half with that same fire. And when (teams) do go on those
types of runs, and its going to happen, we have to retaliate better.Maryland
stayed in sync and took advantage of some poor shooting by the 49ers. Huerter
made a pair of 3-pointers, Jaylen Brantley added another, and the Terrapins had
a 56-49 lead midway through the half.We felt good going in halftime, but give
Maryland credit, they played a terrific second half, Charlotte coach Mark Price
said. They started making their 3s in the second half. Theyre a very good
basketball team. I was proud of the way our guys battled all night long. It was
a good challenge for us.Maryland then pulled away as it continued to stay hot
from the field. Brantley and Trimble hit two more 3-pointers that extended the
margin to 83-64 with just under four minutes left.Weve been through this all
year, having to dig down, Trimble said. Once we went to halftime, Coach Turgeon
gave us an earful and we responded the right way.Ivan Bender also finished with
10 points for the Terrapins.Maryland improved to 11-2 all-time in games played
in Baltimore, which is key recruiting area for coach Mark Turgeon.THE BIG
PICTURECharlotte: The 49ers put together a tough out-of-conference schedule with
road games against Maryland, Florida and Wake Forest and should be battle-tested
for league play.Maryland: The Terrapins finished their out-of-conference
schedule 12-1 with their only loss coming against Pittsburgh in the ACC/Big Ten
Challenge. If some of the younger players continue to contribute, Maryland
should be able stay in the top tier of the league.TRIMBLE LEADS THE WAYTrimble
has now scored 20 or more points in seven games this season. After being held to
just four points in the opening half against Charlotte, Trimble took over the
game and went 5 of 7 from the field, including three 3-pointers.UP
NEXTCharlotte: The 49ers open Conference USA play against visiting North Texas

should be celebrated because it will not always be this way. With the amount of
money given to players by their clubs these days, it is a wonder that so many of
those teams allow the sport to continue to take away many of their assets so
they can play for a different team in the middle of their season.

General manager Billy King says the Brooklyn Nets are looking to add a big man
and confirmed the team worked out centre Jason Collins, who would become the
first openly gay active NBA player if signed. A late Andrew Hoole goal has
denied Western Sydney a victorious start to their stay at Spotless Stadium as
plucky Newcastle held Tony Popovics men to a 2-2 A-League draw. The Jets, buoyed
by last weekends 4-0 shellacking of Brisbane, brought their improved attacking
game to Sydney on Sunday in the hope of shocking last years grand finalists at
their new temporary home ground. The Wanderers very nearly got the job done in
front of a vocal crowd of 13,247, via Aritz Bordas header and a penalty goal by
new club captain Dimas. But Mark Jones improved squad dug in their heels to earn
a valuable away point and reiterate they should not be taken lightly this
season.Jets skipper Nigel Boogaard pulled one back for the Jets with a free
header in the 81st minute, his effort matched seven minutes later when former
Sydney FC winger Hoole bent in a free-kick from outside the box that bounced
past Wanderers goalkeeper Andrew Redmayne. While looking well beaten for much of
the second half, Newcastle had started brightly.In-form Andrew Nabbout was a
speedy outlet on the right wing while coach Mark Jones young back line started
sturdily, 19-year-old Ivan Vujica thwarting the wriggling Jumpei Kusukami more
than once.In the end it was a momentary lapse that gifted the Wanderers the
opening goal.New captain Dimas sent a deep corner into the box for fellow
Spaniard Borda to meet with a glancing header over the line that could have been
avoided had a player guarded the back post. Then, in the shadow of halftime,
Steve Lustica chipped a ball into the path of Ben Kantarovski, who committed an
obvious handball in the area, making way for Dimas to step up to the spot and
send Jets custodian Jack Duncan the wrong way.dddddddddddd.From there the
Wanderers were quick to pounce on turnovers and made it tough for the
Novocastrians to pass out of their own half. The Jets suddenly then rediscovered
their impetus, Devante Clut unsuccessfully attempting to lob Redmayne and
Nabbout firing wide from the edge of the box.In a massive blow, Nabbout appeared
to badly hurt himself in his effort and was promptly subbed off to join injured
teammate Lachlan Jackson on the sidelines.Man-of-the-match Jumpei became more
and more difficult to contain, at one point roasting three defenders and forcing
one of several fine saves from Duncan. But no one expected such a late comeback,
delivered under pressure by Boogaard and Hoole.I was disappointed with the
start, and to concede just before halftime was tough to deal with, Jones
said. But mentally we wanted to hang in there ... and we thought in the last
20-25 minutes wed get something out of the game.Popovic felt the Wanderers
should have finished the Jets off early in the second half. Then they started
getting a lot more territory and put us under pressure, he said. You could sense
that something was coming, but we certainly didnt play the last half hour like
we did in the first 60 minutes. China NFL
