CHICAGO -- The Chicago Cubs claimed outfielder Cole Gillespie off waivers from the San Francisco Giants on Saturday. Gillespie was hitless in nine at-bats over three games with the Giants before he was designated for assignment on Tuesday. He will join the Cubs before Sunday nights game against the St. Louis Cardinals. "Really sound, fundamental baseball guy," manager Dale Sveum said. "Runs well, plays all the outfield positions, hits the ball out of the ballpark, real professional type of player." Sveum said the righty-hitting Gillespie probably will play against left-handers. The 29-year-old Gillespie was selected by the Milwaukee Brewers in the third round of the 2006 draft. He is a .218 hitter in 53 games over parts of three seasons with the Giants and Arizona Diamondbacks. Gillespie played college ball with Cubs second baseman Darwin Barney at Oregon State. They helped the Beavers win the national title in 2006. "Its usually not my job to play front office, but I think its a good pickup for us," Barney said. "He was all-state shortstop kind of guy, good athlete, kind of right-handed bat that we kind of need right now. He can play all outfield positions pretty well, were excited and Im excited to finally play with a teammate from the past." Cheap Retro Jordans For Sale .
