导出博客文章NEW YORK -- It wasnt about visiting New York City during the holiday season that
appealed to Bruce Weber.Rather, the opportunity to play two games in an NBA
arena and NCAA tournament venue appealed to Kansas States coach because of what
it could mean come March. You get a couple of those different venues so hopefully
youre not star struck when -- if -- you get to the tournament, Weber said after
Kansas States 72-54 win over Boston College in the first game of the Barclays
Center Classic on Friday night.Or when we get into the tournament.Freshman
Xavier Sneed led the Wildcats with 16 points and grabbed eight rebounds. My role
on the team is to bring energy off the bench, Sneed said. Thats what I try to
do.Dean Wade and Barry Brown added 11 points apiece as Kansas State improved to
5-0.While Weber has a long-term view, Eagles coach Jim Christian said he is
looking for something more fundamental. We have some guys on our team that, in my
opinion, they need to play harder, Christian said as Boston College fell to
3-2.Even though Ky Bowman led Boston College with 13 point, and Connor Tava and
Jerome Robinson finished with 11 each, Christian was not especially impressed
with his teams performance. We didnt play very well one through five, Christian
said. I thought we got manhandled one through five. The third meeting between the
ACC and Big 12 programs-and the first in regular season play-was not especially
competitive.Kansas State used an 11-2 run spanning 6:47 in the first half to
take control. The run began with Isaiah Maurices jumper at 7:27 which tied the
game 7-7, and was culminated by Wades dunk with 5:46 left in the half. By that
point, the Wildcats had an 18-9 lead that they would not relinquish. The Wildcats
led 31-22 at halftime and limited the Eagles to 29.2 percent shooting from the
field in the first and 33.3 percent for the game.We picked up the pressure,
Weber said. We talked about once they got over half court, kind of inside that
circle, stretch them out a little bit. We had to disrupt them.Boston College
committed 14 turnovers in the first half and 21 for the game, with Sneeds steal
and breakaway jam midway through the second half underscoring Kansas States
prowess in turning turnovers into points.Sneeds jam put the Wildcats up 47-35,
and from there the Eagles never seriously threatened Kansas State. You make runs
with stops, Weber said. And then take advantage of it with transition. The
Wildcats finished the game shooting 45.4 percent from the field.BIG
PICTUREBoston College: After starting the season with four games against small
programs, the Eagles took on a major conference squad in Kansas State and were
found to be significantly lacking. Was it an isolated moment or is Jim
Christians team headed for its third-straight losing season?Kansas State: The
Wildcats first game against a major conference opponent could not have been
scripted better as Kansas State maintained its early first half lead for the
remainder of the game.POLL IMPLICATIONSBoston College: The loss ended the Eagles
three-game winning streak, and probably put to rest any hopes Boston College
could break into the Top 25.Kansas State: Despite a complete performance in
beating Boston College, Kansas State is probably not going to move into the Top
25.NOTABLEBoston College: Nic Popovic was tended to by a trainer as he lay on
the court after being inadvertently elbowed by Kansas States D.J. Johnson early
in the first half.Kansas State: Friday nights game was Kansas States second at
the Barclays Center.UP NEXTBoston College: Will meet the loser of the of the

LOUIS -- The New Orleans Saints looked like a team playing out the string. RIO
DE JANEIRO -- The president of cyclings world governing body defended the
Olympic road course on Saturday, calling it a fair test and suggesting those who
crashed pushed past their limits.Brian Cookson addressed a number of other
issues during a wide-ranging news conference at the Rio de Janeiro Games at the
midway point of the cycling program, including doping, the schedule of the track
cycling program and several road racing issues. But perhaps the biggest
hot-button issue through a week of competition was a road course that some had
labeled too dangerous. One particularly nasty descent caused riders such as
Italian star Vincenzo Nibali to go down and left Dutch rider Annemiek van
Vleuten in the hospital.Weve had discussions about the number of crashes and the
circumstances. It is my belief and our belief at the UCI that the courses were
in the bounds of what was reasonable, Cookson said.Van Vleuten spent several
days in the hospital with a concussion and three small fractures to her spine.
She flew home to the Netherlands on Friday to continue her recovery. Its the
riders responsibility to make the right decisions, Cookson said. I went to speak
with Annemiek in the hospital and talked to her, and in her case, it was an
error of judgment there (going too fast on the descent).Cookson was also asked
about the silver medal won by Olga Zabelinskaya in the time trial. It came just
days after the Court of Arbitration for Sport ruled a ban on Russian athletes
who had been barred from competing for prior doping offenses was unenforceable,
allowing Zabelinskaya to compete. The Russian cyclist who finished second in the
time trial was entitled to be here under the rules of the (World Anti-Doping
Agency) and the IOC, Cookson said. Im guessing she will not be the onlyy
previously convicted doped athlete at the games.ddddddddddddCookson has been
working to clean up the sport after years of doping, including Lance Armstrongs
admission of guilt a few years ago. And he said the positive test of a Brazilian
cyclist in an out-of-competition test the week before the road race was a sign
of progress.Ive said this many times before, cycling has been leading for many
years in the fight against doping in sport, Cookson said. Whether there is a
small number of athletes trying to cheat, I hope not, but if they are, we will
catch them and we will sanction them.In other issues:- Cookson said the UCI is
still examining the blood bags from Operation Puerto, the Spanish police
investigation into a doping ring led by Dr. Eufemiano Fuentes. Cookson otherwise
declined to comment on the ongoing investigation, saying only that when we have
something to report, we will.- The UCI is confident WorldTour teams will compete
in the team time trial at the world championships in Qatar. Several teams
announced plans to boycott the event, in part because they are required to
compete at their own expense.- Cookson said he was open to smaller teams in
major events such as the Tour de France, but he warned that I think some of the
bigger teams would object to that, and there are pros and cons to the details of
that. Its something I wouldnt rule out but lets move forward gradually.- The UCI
hopes to expand the cycling program at future Olympics, though Cookson did not
say whether it would be merely an expansion of the track program or the addition
of another discipline, such as downhill mountain biking or freestyle BMX
    competition. ' ' '
