Released by Tottenham as a youngster, Charlie Daniels only clawed his way up to the Championship at the age of 26. Byron Bell Jersey . Now the Bournemouth full-back is being talked of as a potential England left-back. Adam Bate caught up with him to find out how he did it… Is Howe due more credit? Assessing Bournemouths impressive season under manager Eddie Howe. Given that Charlie Daniels started out playing for Ridgeway Rovers, the same youth club that launched the careers of David Beckham and Harry Kane, its tempting to feel that the Bournemouth left-back was destined to make it to the top. In truth, there are times when the Premier League adventure hes currently enjoying must have felt a long way off.It wasnt even an inevitability for Kane, the player who Daniels used to give a lift to Leyton Orients Chigwell training ground when the striker was on loan there as a teenager. After all, the last time that the pair played alongside each other ended in a 3-0 defeat to Tranmere. Even so, Daniels remembers the potential. Up against Arsenals Tomas Rosicky in an FA Cup tie for 2011 for Leyton Orient He grew up where I grew up so I got to know him really well, he tells Sky Sports. He was only 17 so he wasnt really built like he is now but his finishing with left foot and right foot, you could tell there was something special there.Hes taken his chance because he finally got his opportunity. Thats something that a lot of youngsters dont get at big clubs.Although delivered with an easy charm, its a pointed remark given that Daniels himself was released by Tottenham following three loan spells and not a single minute of first-team action. At least he could be grateful to former Spurs coach Martin Jol. It was his advice that set Daniels on a different path by encouraging him to convert from a left-winger into a left-back.The problem is that while a strikers goals can demand attention, a full-back can only do so much to get back to the top - particularly when still at Orient at the age of 25. Its through promotion that you get the chance, says Daniels. For a lot of defenders it has to happen that way, unless you play when youre very young. A lot of managers will buy players that have played in the league before. But there are a lot of players in the lower leagues who could play in the Premier League. Charlie Daniels Its all about getting that chance. Whether someone would sign you is another thing. A lot of managers will buy players that have played in the league before. Thats not a criticism of managers, thats their prerogative. But there are a lot of players in the lower leagues who could play in the Premier League. You can see them coming through. Look at Aaron Creswell [who scored the opener for Tranmere in that game against Orient in 2011] or Michail Antonio [who played league football with six clubs before joining West Ham]. Theres a drive to give English players who do well in the Championship their chance. I hope it continues. So does Daniels believe he was ready for his chance back then? Id like to think I was, he says. With the coverage you get now, you can watch and analyse so many games so its quite easy to compare it to how you play. I always felt that if I did get the opportunity, I was prepared. I knew what to do and I knew how Id play if I did get the chance. Winning promotion from the Championship last season with Bournemouth Thankfully, I got it with Bournemouth. And if Im honest, I didnt really think itd be with Bournemouth. I dont think many of the lads did either. It was manager Eddie Howe who changed all that and after the Cherries got to the second tier, belief continued to grow. It was after wed played our first season in the Championship, says Daniels. We got to the end of the season and we all said to each other, We can win this league. There was no team in there that we feared or we felt was better than us. So our goal the following season was to get to the play-offs. Then we got to January time and wed played everyone and we really did realise we could win it. Thats what happened.Getting to the top flight for the first time in the clubs history was a story in itself. Instead, Bournemouth have enjoyed themselves in the Premier League and go into the weekend 10 points clear of the drop zone. Perhaps most remarkably, theyve done so by playing with the same style and much of the same personnel. Daniels hasnt missed a game since September. Daniels has scored three goals this season including a penalty against West Brom The gaffer said at the first meeting in pre-season that we were not going to change our philosophy, he says. This is the way he wants his team to play and the message was that we just had to get better at it. At the start of the season we were actually playing well but we werent getting the results. Thats when you start to think this could be a long season. There was a lot of media attention around the club and deservedly so given what had been achieved. I wouldnt say we got lost in it, but losing on the first day [to Aston Villa] was a big reminder that we had to step up. But once we settled down and got the euphoria out of the way, we started playing our brand of football and picking up points. We havent looked back. Only Matt Ritchie has more assists than Daniels for Bournemouth this season Daniels has thrived. As well as getting through his defensive work, he has scored three goals, provided five assists - only Matt Ritchie can match that - and completed more dribbles than anyone else at the club. Hes even been able to take his partnership with winger Marc Pugh into the Premier League too - one forged back in English footballs third tier.Im always wanting to learn, watching other players and their styles, says Daniels. When we were coming though the leagues, me and Marc watched lots of clips of Leighton Baines and Steven Pienaar and their combination play. Guys like Jordi Alba and Marcelo in Spain, with their enthusiasm and willingness to get forward, are great to watch as a left-back too. Defenders - Distance covered in PL 2015/16 Player Team Distance Craig Dawson West Brom 389.2 km Simon Francis Bournemouth 358.1 km Charlie Daniels Bournemouth 356.0 km Toby Alderweireld Tottenham 355.3 km Hector Bellerin Arsenal 354.5 m For a defender to make that sort of attacking contribution in a newly-promoted team like Bournemouth requires serious energy levels. Daniels has covered more ground than any other left-back in the Premier League - and one of the two defenders above him is Simon Francis, the man on the other flank. Its been hard work but Ive enjoyed the hard work, says Daniels. Every time you get promoted, you have to improve yourself in every aspect of your game to match the demands of the next level. We put a lot of emphasis on our fitness at the start of the season because we knew that would be the bare minimum that we were going to need. Daniels has completed more dribbles than any other Bournemouth player The way we play is so expansive with the way we use the full-backs and the wide-play combinations but we also knew we werent going to have as much of the ball. So weve had to press the other teams and nullify their threats. Thats probably why Im up there on those stats. Its not gone unnoticed. Daniels was even linked with an England call-up in February. To even be mentioned is a proud feeling. It makes me feel like Im doing things right and improve even more, he says. Maybe that chance wont come. But even at 29, Daniels journey isnt done yet. I always just try to improve that little bit each week and you become a better player over time, he adds. Its taken time, but Charlie Daniels has got there in the end. Also See: Is Howe due more credit? Latest Bournemouth news Cheap Football Packers Jerseys . -- Detroit shortstop Jose Iglesias says he has stress fractures in both legs and isnt sure when hell be able to play again, leaving the Tigers two weeks to fill his spot for opening day and perhaps a lot longer. Brett Favre Jersey . The game was the first of two international friendlies that Canada is playing during the international break, with the second game against Slovenia set for Tuesday in Celje. Canada looked uncomfortable defensively throughout the game, and every free kick that came into Canadas penalty box looked like ending up in the back of the net.DETROIT -- The Detroit Tigers arent just winning games this week. They are making history. One night after Rajai Davis hit Detroits first game-ending grand slam in 10 years, Rick Porcello significantly raised the bar. In a 3-0 win over Oakland, Porcello became just the fourth pitcher in franchise history to throw a shutout without walking or striking out a batter, and the first since Dizzy Trout in 1944. Porcello was slightly disappointed by his 95-pitch outing, even after learning how rare it was. "In the last couple innings, I was hoping Id get at least one strikeout," he said. "I didnt want to go out there and put up a zero. Still, with a game like this, Im certainly not going to trade it in for anything." Porcello recorded 17 groundball outs and 10 in the air while becoming the first major-leaguer to accomplish the feat since Baltimores Jeff Ballard on Aug. 21, 1989. Porcello was eight months old when Ballard did it against Milwaukee. "To be honest, it was pretty boring out there," said Torii Hunter, who didnt record an out in right field. "But that just shows you how great he was tonight. He was throwing that sinker right down the middle, and it was dropping out of the strike zone, and they were just beating it into the ground." The As got three singles and a double, and only got one runner to third base. "Our guys were swinging at strikes, but everything was moving," Oakland manager Bob Melvin said. "Hes got a good sinker and a good change-up, and now hes mixing in a good breaking ball to keep you off balance. Thats just a very well-pitched game by him." Porcellos night might have been historic, but it certainly didnt come out of the blue. He pitched his first career shutout in his previous start, beating the Rangers on June 26, and pitched six shutout innings against Cleveland on June 20. "I dont want to jinx it," he joked when asked about his shutout streak. "All I know is that Im throwing the ball really well right now, Im making consistent pitches when I need them, and my defence is helping me out. Im also getting some good breaks, which every pitcher needs." Porcello (11-4) only had one career complete game before this stretch, but is now the first Tigers pitcher since Jack Morris to throw back-to-bback shutouts. Tramon Williams Jersey. Morris threw three in a row in July, 1986. "Obviously, Rick is throwing the ball extremely well right now," Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said. "He had a great curveball and changeup tonight, and the sinker was better than that. It makes my job a lot easier when the starter has only thrown 88 pitches through eight innings." Brad Mills (1-1) took the loss for Oakland, allowing three runs on six hits and three walks in six-plus innings. The Tigers took a 1-0 lead in the fourth when Miguel Cabrera walked, took third on J.D. Martinezs double and scored on a groundout by Hunter. Oakland, in the meantime, was becoming the latest team to struggle for answers against Porcello, managing only two hits in the first six innings. Martinez, starting for the second straight night while Victor Martinez deals with soreness in his left side, made it 3-0 with a two-run homer in the sixth. After moving into the everyday lineup in early June, J.D. Martinez is hitting .376 with seven homers and 20 RBIs in 19 games. "I threw him a change, and I think he was sitting on it," Mills said. "I certainly didnt locate it where I wanted it." After that, the only suspense was if Porcello could finish off the shutout, and do it with a double-digit pitch count. He accomplished both, becoming the first Tigers pitcher to throw a shutout in under 100 pitches since Armando Galarraga in 2010. That was the game Galarraga had to face an extra hitter after first base umpire Jim Joyce blew the call on what should have been the last out in a perfect game. NOTES: Victor Martinez took batting practice before the game, and told Ausmus that he could play, but Ausmus decided to rest him for another day. ... Tigers 3B Nick Castellanos took full advantage of his position in Detroits shifted defence, picking up a pair of 5-3 assists while playing in short right field. ... Oakland C Derek Norris is getting closer to returning from a sore back, and could play in Wednesdays series finale. ...
